What You Resist Persists

Unless you’ve been living in a cave somewhere, you’ve probably heard many times that when you focus on something, you are calling that experience towards yourself. It is the main principle presented in “The Secret” and most of us have come to understand its truth.

Our beliefs about the environment and the society that surround us, make us think in a certain way, and the way we think draws the people, the situations and the things we experience to our lives. So how does this relate to the old saying “what you resist persists?” – You may ask.

Consciously, we know the difference between a negative thought and a positive one. However, our subconscious mind cannot discriminate between “yes” and “no.” Our subconscious mind just knows one word and that is “yes.”

For instance, if I say “I don’t want to attract more debt”, my conscious mind is hearing it exactly as is, but my subconscious mind is just hearing “I want to attract more debt”, skipping the word “don’t”.

So how many thoughts with negative words do you have each day? Scary to think about it, isn’t it? Well, not really. The good news is that we can learn to train ourselves to talk and think in a way that we create the things we do want in our lives. The wrong patterns we’ve been using are 100% reversible!

You see, your subconscious mind is like a child. You can guide, teach and mold a child to become his best no matter if he’s made mistakes in the past. Knowing this, the way to guide, teach and mold your subconscious mind is to avoid self talk that involves words such as can’t, won’t, don’t, and not.

Yes, it takes work and it takes time, but just as a child, your subconscious mind will eventually learn this and form a good habit that will change the outcome of your life.

When we think “I don’t want to attract more debt” we are creating “resistance” to debt, which in turn makes debt persist. This creates a domino effect. Our thoughts create resistance. Resistance creates stress. Stress consumes energy. And the problem persists. The domino effect becomes a vicious circle. This is why we feel so weak and with low energy when we feel buried in problems. We are expending energy in a negative way.

Resistance is a struggle. Is like pushing a cart uphill with no help. We struggle when things don’t go our way. So every time we resist something, we are spending our energy in the wrong way. It is much better –and much easier indeed- to stop resisting what we don’t want and focus on attracting what we do want. Instead of resisting poverty, and struggling to make more money to prevent it by getting a second job, try to focus on attracting prosperity by having positive thoughts while working.

If you hate your job and are thinking about this every morning, you are resisting going to work. Therefore, it will be harder to get a promotion or find a better job. Think about it… what you resist persists.

This also applies to every other situation in your life, like your relationships with others. When you blame another person for what has happened to you or are angry at somebody, you are creating more of “what you resist persists”, thus preventing new experiences and positive people from arriving into your life.

Remember; always focus on embracing the positive rather than resisting the negative. Releasing negative thoughts of resistance will free your energy to use it in a more positive way. You will feel more energetic, more vibrant and more alive when you focus on what you do want versus what you don’t want. Quit the “resistance” patterns and you will start seeing some amazing changes in your life.

I personally agree with this article completely. If you continue to focus on the things you don't want, even if you are affirming to yourself "I don't want X" or "I wish X didnt Y" etc. your mind ignores the do's and dont's and by the Law of Attraction you are automatically beginning to attract what it is you were thinking of, whether it was something you wanted or not. Of course, emotional investment does play a factor and you will see far greater results with subjects that provoke an emotional state in your mind.
